OPR Births: DALMELLINGTON. 'John a son born to Ivie Greg'. No mother stated - But on John's Death Certificate both Ivie Gregg and Elspeth McCulloch are named as parents. John Gregg married Jean Mckay 24th September 1803 at Dalmellington. Although stated as a weaver on earlier OPR's John was described as a Hostler and was buried aged 79 a pauper. His Death Certificate[No.63] stated he had no medical attendance and the informant was his grandson John Gemmel[P40].
JOHN GREGG appears on the The Dalmellington Volunteers roll in 12th June 1800. All able-bodied men were required to serve as volunteers under the various 'Defence of the Realm' Acts of Parliament in force. At the time of Hodgkinson's visit, the most recent and prevailing Act was 38 Geo. III c. 27 (1797, Defence of the Realm). Records of enrolment in the parish of Dalmellington under a subsequent, similar Act have survived, and are transcribed below. The terms of engagement were printed, and followed by the signatures of the subscribers.

Margaret married James Rae in 1831 but is recorded as having an illigitimate? child in 1842:-
1) OPR DALMELLINGTON:' Macadam Galbraith natural child of Margaret Gregg or Mrs. Rae born 21st August 1842'.
Margaret may well have been a widow in 1842 when MacAdam was born
A Margaret Gregg is also recorded as having an illegitimate child in 1843.
2) OPR DALMELLINGTON:' Alexander natural child of Margaret Gregg the father of whom she declared to be Alex. Willett weaver. The child was born on ? and baptised in the sessions on 5th Feb. 1843 to herself by the name of above. By Mr Houston minister here'.
The two births are only 6 months apart so possibly there were two Margaret Gregg's involved?
