OPR AYR: 'James Greg lawful son to James Greg master of manners and Janet Henderson his spouse born 8th August 1754 and baptised 18th August'. James would have been named after his father. It is assumed the boy died before 1767 when another James was born.

On a torn page in the Ayr parish register a child is recorded to have been born in 1756 to James Greg & Janet Henderson.
OPR AYR: '......... ....... to James Greg and Janet Henderson his spouse born 18th and baptised 19th February 1756'.
Unfortunately the Name and gendre was missing but an OPR marriage entry for 1775 at Ayr was found by Matthew Greig[Giffnock] for a Margaret Greg married to William Baird.
The OPR reads 'William Baird sailor and Margaret Greg daughter of James Greg Dancing Master gave in their names to be proclaimed in order to marriage and after proclamation they were married accordingly on 22nd July 1775'. They also named their first child JAMES. It is most likely the marriage refers to Margaret daughter of James and Janet, the birth entry of which is torn.
No child births other than James has been found to William Baird and Margaret Greg [ADG 2005]

OPR AYR: 'Jean Greg lawful daughter to James Greg Dancing Master and Janet Henderson his spouse born 8th September 1761 and baptised 9th September'. This Jean is probably the Jean Gregg[P380] who married William Brown[P382] C.1779
We know that Jeans father was a Land Surveyer as stated on the birth record of her son William Wallace Brown. It is suggested by Matthew Greig[Gifnock] that Jean may have been daughter to James Greg[P437] and Janet Henderson[P438][F142-Ayr]. Likely in that two children to this marriage named James and Janet.
James was known as a Master of Manners and a Dance Master but Jeans father was described as Land Surveyer on the birth record of her son William Wallace.
Jean had died by 1798 when a Petition raised on behalf of her daughter Janet DELLA Brown described Jean as the late spouse of William Brown

OPR AYR: 'William Greg lawful son to James Greg Master of Manners and Janet Henderson his spouse born 20th April 1766 and baptised 29th April'.
It is believed that our William is the son of James Greg. They are both known to have been 'Dancing Masters' and 'Master of Manners'. It is William who is credited as being the Dance Master to ROBERT BURNS at the Bachelors Club Tarbolton in the late 1770's. A fiddle said to be the one used by William at the time was presented to the Scottish National Trust in 1997 by a Major John Weir who acquired the fiddle from a local source in Tarbolton.
We have an OPR death record of a William Greg of this period who died as a boy, AYR :'William Greg son of James Greg aged 10 yrs and 3 months died of fever buried 1 December 1776'. This is about 4 months younger than the William in question and may have been son to another James Greg.?
OPR TARBOLTON: 'William Gregg from Failford Hospital was interred at Tarbolton 19th May 1841'. First census in Scotland JUNE 1841 just too late.
William's age would have been 75 when he died (assuming the birth details/parents accredited to him are correct[1997ADG]).
William's name was spelled 'Gregg' when he died.
William's son John[P457] inherited the 'Gregg Fiddle'

Many family details have been confirmed from Agnes' Death certificate[1855] giving information for husband, children and names of her parents. It also confirmed her own birth place to have been St. Quivox Ayrs. Agnes and William lived the latter years of their lives at Failford Alms Houses where Agnes outlived William by 10 years, and died of 'Natural Decay' aged 90 - 2 October 1855. Informant - Son William
1841 and 1851 census at Failford Hospital shows Agnes as being Dancing Teachers widow age 75 and 84* respectively.
According to details on her Death Cert.(1855 ) Agnes was born in St Quivox(1766). Parents William Currie(wright) and Elizabeth Reid. Details of a Margaret also born in St Quivox(1774) to William Currie/Elizabeth Reid suggests she was most likely sister to Agnes.

James GREGG:
Born Sunday 27 December 1767, Ayr Ayrs IGI C115787
Christened Friday 1 January 1768, Ayr
Died Before 1860
OCCUPATION: Writer/lawyer/Barrister
SOURCE: OPR/SCR FR461/IGI
This James was the second boy to be named James. The older brother must have died prior to 1767.
OPR AYR: 'James Greg lawful son to James Greg Master of Manners and Janet Henderson his spouse born 27th December 1767 and baptised 1st January 1768'.
Although relationship to James Greg and Janet Henderson is recorded in parish records, it is assumed[ADG1997] that this is the same person who married Lewis Brown. James is later described as a writer - being lawyer/solicitor in Scotland. James named his first two children after his wifes parents - Anne and William. His next two were named James and Janet after his own parents.
In June 1807 James Gregg was known as Writer and Town Clerk, Kilmarnock
May 2004. From The archives of Gebbie & Wilson Solicitors of Starthaven. 'William Gebbie - Founder of Gebbie & Wilson Solicitors of Starthaven. 'On 1st June 1807, William was apprenticed as a Lawyer to JAMES GREGG, Writer and Town Clerk, Kilmarnock. After a five years apprenticeship, from which he was honourably discharged on 13th June 1812 (aged 18), he proceeded to Glasgow where he found congenial work at the University and in the office of Grahame & Mitchell, Writers.
For reasons not entirely clear, Strathaven was chosen as the place to set up his own practice and he arrived in September 1816. Interestingly, the original of the letter to his mother is, together with copies of his first business correspondence dated 5th September 1816, still held in the archives of the firm. He was formally admitted as a Procurator before the Sheriff Court in Hamilton on 22nd November 1816 and continued to practice until his death on 11th April 1865 in his 72nd Year.'

The name may have been Lervis/Lowis[ADG1997]. The register showed Lewis as being a male but it is believed Lewis was a female and later[aged 19] married James Gregg 17th May 1790. Also record for William Wallace Brown[half brother to Lewis] born 28th November 1780 states He was 3rd SON to William Brown.

Family
No recorded marriage has yet[ADG1999] been traced for James and Janet but OPR details for their childrens births are all available. Hence estimated marriage date and birth dates for both.
It is unusual that there appears no record(to date 1999) of a child named Janet, although periods between 1763-1766 and 1767-1771 would facilitate the births of further children.
We have only four possible marriages recorded to date(1999) for children of James and Janet. It may be that others married outside of Ayr.
